Daughter’s Comment On Blog Post

Just very recently my daughter cooked fried rice. It was very simple but tasted very delicious. I called it Special Fried Rice because she offered to cook it when she saw that I was very busy. That’s so sweet of her! Just in case you missed out on her comment on the blog post, she wrote, “Hello to everyone who reads my mom’s blog. I’m Sharon her daughter who cooked the fried rice that you are all so lovely to compliment  :) I’m just glad I didn’t burn down the kitchen haha. Thanks for all your comments. Keep coming back for more recipes and definitely try them out! Especially my mom’s food, which I know for sure is absolutely the most delicious in the whole world because I’ve tried it all lol. Mom, you’re amazing and I love you to bits.” Wow……beautiful and so touching! That makes her even sweeter….haha. Well, I do hope that I’m always an inspiration to her! Actually she is a real inspiration to me.

Chicken And Sichuan Preserved Vegetable

Chicken and mustard

Chicken and mustard

I’m excited to introduce a special vegetable used often in Chinese dishes. It’s my favourite and have not eaten it for a long time. It’s Sichuan preserved vegetable. There are several types of Sichuan reserved vegetables but this particular one comes in lumps. It may look ugly to some people but it’s very delicious cooked with chicken or any other meat. It goes very well with rice, congee, or rice porridge. It tastes a little crunchy. I cooked it with chicken the other day. This is one dish that you will be very happy to have left over because it tastes even better the next day.

In Malaysia it’s sold in jars and coated with chili paste. But the ones that I bought here from the Chinese shop were sold in plastic bags and very thinly coated with the chili paste. I found the flavour is not as good but I should be very thankful to be able to get it here.

Okra (Lady’s Fingers) And Anchovies Stir Fry

Okra and anchovies stir fry

Okra and anchovies stir fry

Okra is one vegetable that I eat a lot since I was young. It is a very healthy vegetable. It is long and slender and I think that’s why it’s called ‘ladies’ fingers’ in Malaysia. My parents used to plant a lot of okra plants. There’s one type which is lighter green, bigger and longer. That species is the best in terms of texture and taste. Over here, I can only get the smaller and darker green type. They are not as delicious but it’s better than nothing.

Chinese New Year Women’s Hot Pot (Steam Boat) Party

Having fun cooking and eating

Having fun cooking and eating

Chinese enjoys Hot Pot. In Malaysia we call it Steam Boat. This is a very fun and healthy way to eat and particularly most welcoming in this bitterly cold winter to keep everyone happy, nice and warm. The most important is a soup base. It can be spicy like the tom yum soup or a non spicy one. Usually we have both. Then there’s a wide array of raw meat and seafood, vegetables, noodles and cooked meatballs to be cooked in the boiling soup. Little bowls of sauces are served as dips. At the end of all the cooking, the soup tastes the best in the world.

Very refreshing, beautiful, delicious and utterly impressive

Table of delicacies

Chinese New Year Eve is a very important event to all Chinese. It’s the time when family members gather together for the reunion dinner if possible. Many travel home from far to join the rest for this auspicious time. But for me, sadly, it’s been quite a number of years since I’ve not been back for the Chinese New Year. We miss home a lot during this time and so are our families back home in Malaysia.

Sweet Potato Donuts

Syrup coated donuts

DONUTS or DOUGHNUTS! At the mention of it, my daughter will immediately go, ‘Ooooooooh, I want some’. She loves Krispy Kreme so much that she is willing to trade her breakfast, lunch and dinner for it! I seriously wonder what is so special about it. I mean, it’s just a small piece of flour dough with a hole in it and costs more than £1 each! To me it’s like eating gold. Besides, how do they still stay soft for a few days? That begs the question, ‘What are the ingredients?’

More Malaysian Food in London

Kuih Serimuka (rice pudding)

Kuih Serimuka (rice pudding)

Malaysian food is top of my list of food…..full of flavours. With so many different races residing in Malaysia, a dish of fried noodles can turn out in many ways, presentation and tastes. To me, it’s important to go to the right place with the right chef cooking the food. There is not much choice in UK. It can be quite a frustrating and disappointing experience to go to any one thinking you can get authentic Malaysian food. So far, I’m quite pleased with Malaysian Hall at London which offers rather authentic Malaysian food at a very reasonable price. I had written 3 articles previously.
