I love street food, also known as hawker food. To me, it’s better than restaurant food. If I am to visit another country, I would dive for street food and not those at the restaurants. There is something about street food that fascinates me and keeps me craving for more. On top of that, they are way cheaper than restaurant food.

On my recent trip back to Malaysia, a very good friend took us around for a few days trying out all the best street food in my home town, Sibu, a town in the state of Sarawak…….the best coffee shops for the best local food and the best drink. In Malaysia, street foods are mainly sold in small coffee shops or sometimes at the evening or night markets, called ‘pasar malam‘.

Chinese New Year Women’s Hot Pot (Steam Boat) Party

Chinese enjoys Hot Pot. In Malaysia we call it Steam Boat. This is a very fun and healthy way to eat and particularly most welcoming in this bitterly cold winter to keep everyone happy, nice and warm. The most important is a soup base. It can be spicy like the tom yum soup or a non spicy one. Usually we have both. Then there’s a wide array of raw meat and seafood, vegetables, noodles and cooked meatballs to be cooked in the boiling soup. Little bowls of sauces are served as dips. At the end of all the cooking, the soup tastes the best in the world.

Very refreshing, beautiful, delicious and utterly impressive. Best!

Chinese New Year Women’s Happy Hours

How cool it is to be able to celebrate New Year for 15 days! That is what Chinese New Year is. It’s a great time of get-together, food and merry-making. It’s a time of building relationships, especially among family members and friends and making new friends through all the visitation and parties.

My family has been eating a lot of awesome food this Chinese New Year and having lots of fun together as a family and also with friends. There’s still one more week of celebration to go. This whole celebration will end on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, called ‘Chap Goh Mei‘. We had an amazing Chinese New Eve with friends but the other day we had an all Chinese New Year Women’s Happy Hours when all our men were at work. We had lots of food and fun. I think there is more fun when no man is around…haha. We always seem to make our men jealous…haha.

Chinese New Year Eve is a very important event to all Chinese. It’s the time when family members gather together for the reunion dinner if possible. Many travel home from far to join the rest for this auspicious time. But for me, sadly, it’s been quite a number of years since I’ve not been back for the Chinese New Year. We miss home a lot during this time and so are our families back home in Malaysia.

Pineapples are very sweet and cheap there. I used to plant them in my backyard. They are extremely delicious when plucked ripe from the plant.

This time I cooked and invited some of my friends; about 35 people altogether for Christmas and also Year End Celebration. We had an awesome time of food, games, singing, jokes and chatting. Christmas day is over but the fun and joyous festive atmosphere still fills the air. My family had a lovely time staying in. Instead of lazing around, we tried to make some changes to the interior settings. We hope to have a nice music corner, a reading corner, a computer corner, a coffee corner, an exercise corner and an entertaining corner. Looks like quite an ambition but it is achievable.
