stevia in powder and liquid

I am very excited to share with you that I was one of the 4 lucky winners for a NuStevia giveaway at Shirley’s blog, Luxury Haven. Shirley runs a lot of giveaways on her blog but most of the time it’s for local Singaporeans. But NuStevia giveaway went international. I was so excited. I needed to try my luck, hoping so much that I will get it as I like natural food. And true enough, I got it, SO happy!…..*big smiles*. This is my second win in giveaways. The first one was when I won a big box of Hotel Chocolate for Valentine’s Day. You can read about it at Valentine’s day Gift From Hotel Chocolate. My gosh….blogging is just SO fun! I hope you’ll start blogging too if you haven’t.

If you had mentioned ’stevia’ to me many years ago, I would think that you are talking about someone…..haha. It sounds like the name of a person! But ongoing reading about food and health helped me to know about this wonderful natural sweetener that is extracted from the stevia plants which is a herb. The leaves are known to be at least 30 times sweeter than refined sugar. The extract is known to be more than 200-300 times sweeter. Best of all, it’s zero in calories. Stevia comes in different forms……powder or extract. NuStevia extract comes in 4 flavours……orange, peppermint, vanilla and natural. Some stevia sweetener comes with a little bitterness but NuStevia is non-bitter. So when you buy stevia, look out for the right one. The difference comes from the type of stevia plants used.

I tried a packet of the stevia on grapefruit. I never like grapefruit because it’s sour but eating it with some sugar sprinkled on top makes it really delicious. A friend taught me that.

Cut the grapefruit

Cut the grapefruit

A sharp knife does the trick. Just go round the grapefruit as shown in the picture, not too deep into the bottom as you don’t want to poke through the skin of the grapefruit. Then slowly move your knife around the bottom to remove the whole half of the grapefruit from the skin. Cut into 8 wedges by slicing through gently.

Sprinkle with the stevia powder and enjoy a sweet, refreshing, juicy grape fruit without any added calories. Just use a teaspoon to scoop out the grapefruit wedges. It’s fun to eat. You can even use the skin as an ice cream bowl and save some washing up…..*smiles*.

Usually I used a teaspoon or more sugar on each half of the grapefruit which means I will be taking 2-3 teaspoons of sugar every time I eat a grapefruit. But the other day, I only used less than half a packet of the stevia for the whole grapefruit and it was sweeter than when I use sugar. That’s simply amazing! This is a sure way to cut down on calories for those who want to lose some weight, or for those who need to avoid sugar due to diabetic or other health conditions.

I also tried it in my coffee. Usually I used 2 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee, but I noticed that less than half a small packet of the stevia is a lot sweeter than 2 teaspoons of sugar! I’m going to put a few packets in my bag so that whenever I go to cafes, I will use my own sugar, NuStevia!

But most important of all, it’s a great alternative to refined sugar or artificial sugar. There are too much hidden refined sugar and artificial sugar in our food. I would advice you to read the ingredients. You’d be shocked to find words that you can’t even pronounce. I still remember one day, many years ago, when I was at the supermarket with my daughter when she said she wanted yogurt drink. Of course she can have it. In the car, she drank a bottle, Then when we got home, she decided to look at the ingredients. Suddenly, she went, “Mom, there’s aspartame!” I was shocked and snatched the bottle from her to take a look at myself. I couldn’t believe what I saw. The next day, I took the remaining 5 bottles to the supermarket to return. The lady at the counter asked, “Is there anything wrong?” I replied, “Yes, there’s aspartame in it. It’s bad for health.” She didn’t say anything and refunded me back in full. I’m really glad that my girls read ingredients.

Please read more about sugar and health to make better choices for yourself and your loved ones. Dr Mercola has written a very good article about it at The 4 Best, and 3 Worst, Sweeteners to have in Your Kitchen. You’ll most likely do a real kitchen check after reading it….*wink*. For me, I will try my best to avoid anything that’s artificial. This means the best is still homemade as you are in control of what goes into the food. Not only is it much better for health but it’s a lot cheaper too.

How much sugar do you think you are taking? Is it too much or acceptable amount? Do you read the ingredients on packaging?

Right, Olympics is still on and I’m finding myself turning into a real TV addict….*grin*. Thank goodness….it’s only 2 weeks…haha. By the time the Olympics is over, I really hope my leg is fit enough to drive so that I can be out and about. My favourite Olympic sports are badminton, tennis, volleyball, diving, gymnastic and swimming. What is your favourite?

Till then see you in my next post. Take care and enjoy your day!

Quote of the day……

Interesting piece! I’m curious more and more about stevia (and I agree - keep thinking it’s a person!)

Congratulations to you!! So far, I also have won two times in blogging.. thanks to the generous bloggers.. one day, I also must give a giveaway.. :)

I have been taking grapefruit for the past few days.. RM10 for 5 juicy ones.. just a moment ago, i blended 6 green apples plus one grapfruit.. hahaha.. what an odd combination, right?

suituapui  on August 1st, 2012

Congrats. I eat anything but all in moderation - a little bit wouldn’t kill us, I guess. Can’t imagine people going for durian buffets…or eating monstrous burgers and things like that.

@Blackswan - Shirley, I must really thank you lots again for hosting the giveaway. I just like my win so much! I’ll surely be using a lot of stevia from now onwards. I’m so glad that I receive so many types. Hope more people will substitute sugar with stevia for better health. Hope more luck comes my way for more win in giveaways :D

@Belinda @zomppa - Haha…so I’m not the only one to think stevia is the name of a person. Belinda, you just make me feel better….haha :D

@claire - Hey, we are lucky! Let me know if you have a giveaway :P Hope it’s open to all. Would love to try my luck again. Oh, any durians giveaway?…..haha. Whah… you blended 6 apples and 1 grapefruit? That’s for how many people? I love juices too :D

@suituapui - Whah….Arthur, you are very discipline when comes to eating. I don’t think I am so discipline. But occasionally breaking all the rules is ok, right? :P Haven’t been doing that for a real long time though.

I hardly eat grapefruit, hehe…

Mich - Piece of Cake  on August 1st, 2012

Congrats Mary. Stevia is a great choice… its very expensive locally, so I import some of these healthier sweeteners such as agave nectar and the likes from the US…
