My Super Special Birthday
Me and the rainbow birthday cake
It’s my birthday today….yeah!!! A year older a year wiser. Ooops…now I wonder. I went to my dentist the other day and an x-ray showed that I still have a wisdom tooth sleeping happily just beneath the skin!!! I was shocked beyond belief. Looks like I am still not wise enough…hmmmm. Maybe the Year of the Rabbit will bring it out! Oh no, that would mean pain and suffering if it finally decides to come through.
February is always a very busy and special month for my family. Chinese New Year often falls on February. That keeps us very busy cooking, eating and fun times together and with friends. Then there is the Valentine’s Day which adds to more eating and happy times together with loves ones. On top of that comes my birthday. That just means more gifts for me and more food….*BIG smiles*.
Belgian chocolate
You probably won’t believe what I had been eating on my birthday…lots of this finest Belgian chocolate. Not only do I love the rough look but also the taste which is so rich and creamy in the mouth. Every bite is heavenly, just like my winning Valentine’s Gift From Hotel Chocolat. I have never eaten so many pieces of chocolate in one day. They are seriously good. Of course I know it’s very fattening. I’ll just need more sessions of badminton to burn off the calories.
I must say my birthday this year is the best and super special. I was fully taken by surprise when my friends celebrated my birthday in the afternoon and another group gave me another surprised birthday party the very evening over the weekend. They really made me feel so special. I feel SO touched by their love. It’s one of those special moments that keeps me awake the whole night feeling extremely thankful and blessed to have such amazing friends. I appreciate all of them very much. On top of that, the many birthday greetings from friends and loved ones from far and near brought such a feeling of joy in my heart and smiles all over my face.
Rainbow birthday cake
This is the biggest cake that I have ever had for my birthday. It may look like a kid’s birthday cake but I totally love it. The rainbow is always significant to me. It reminds me of God’s promises and it reminds me of the few children’s church camps that I ran yearly while I was back in Malaysia called ‘Rainbow Camp’. Those days were the best part of my life teaching kids, having tonnes of fun with them while at the same time training my own girls to be young leaders. The kids are very precious to me and I still keep in touch with many of them.
Cheesecake and raspberry mousse birthday cake
This is another birthday cake made by a very good friend for the evening party. I was told that it was just a Chinese New Year party. Little did I know that it was to celebrate my birthday, too. When the cake was brought out, I was just speechless but absolutely happy. It was one of the best cakes that I had eaten, cotton cheesecake at the bottom and raspberry mousse at the top and beautifully decorated with my favourite fruits….blueberries, kiwis and grapes. The combination was just superb. My friend even gave me the recipe to make it. I will definitely make it one of these days.
Chinese New Year salad (yee sang)
This is the famous Chinese New Year salad called ‘yee sang’ made by another very good friend. It’s one of my top favourites. It’s a very colourful, healthy and delicious dish.

The hostess cooked all the above food here. They were all very, very delicious, every one of them. My friend took 2 days to prepare all these fabulous food! There were desserts too but I forgot to take pictures.
Now, the BIGGEST surprise of all……I mean REAL REAL SURPRISE….. was when my youngest daughter got up yesterday morning and said, “Mom, I’m taking a day off tomorrow.” Immediately I asked “Why?” She said, “To be with you”. Being slow, I asked her again, “But why? I am fine on my own!” She replied, “It’s your birthday and I just want to be with you. You can ask me to do anything and I will do it. I will cook lunch and dinner for you or we can go out together to eat and I will pay for it.” She smiled and gave me a BIG hug! Oh wow…..my jaw dropped and my heart must have missed a few beats! I just couldn’t believe it. I really didn’t expect that. That was just the BEST birthday gift ever.
Then I asked her, “You are cooking? Wow!” She said, “I can cook spaghetti carbonara.” She hardly cooks and that’s so far her best dish. It’s very delicious but mind you, it’s very rich, creamy and cheesy. It will keep me full from morning until evening. I said, “Great, but it’s so fattening.” She said, “I can make it lighter and less fattening for you.” Isn’t she so sweet? It looks like she has suddenly grown up!
My youngest daughter is a very active outdoor girl. She loves sports and enjoys volleyball, basketball, badminton and snowboarding. She has a lot of sports friends. To get her to stay at home for the day and just be with me would be almost close to impossible. That must be a big sacrifice for her and a real love for me. I feel so proud of her. I feel extremely blessed.
Well, we went to MacDonald quite early this morning just to sit and chat over some light food. We had a most wonderful time together. 2 friends were going to drop by so we came back to cook some simple food for lunch.
Actually my girl cooked. See what she cooked here below? My friends enjoyed the food very much. It was a very good, healthy lunch and not spaghetti carbonara. Really proud of her that she cooked all that….a total surprise to me. She just knows what I like…healthy food if possible. If there’s anything about food blogging, I must say that it’s the best organised cooking resource for our kids when it comes to cooking. It’s also one of the best hobbies to have. Even I myself often refer to the Recipes section of my blog when I want to cook for a special occasion, like parties or a special meal for my family. My daughter cooked the chicken and the seaweed soup from my blog.
Peri-peri chicken goujons
This is one of my latest favourite chicken dish. My girl followed my recipe at Peri-peri Chicken Goujons (strips) - Better Than Nandos.
Stir fried broccoli
A simple, healthy stir fried broccoli dish.
Baked sweet potatoes
I really like this. Sweet potatoes are always my favourite. They are just SO good baked. It’s very simple and easy. Just cut the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise, lay the cut side down on the paper lined tray, poke the skin with fork and bake at 200 degrees Celsius for about 30 minutes. Seaweed soup
This is my favourite soup….healthy and delicious. Seaweed is very beneficial to health. Read more about it at Healthy Seaweed Soup. If you like seaweed as salad, you can click on Korean Chilli Wakame Seaweed Salad made by my eldest daughter. It’s very delicious.
Flaky Chinese pancakes
Love letter biscuits
My friends brought me some food, too…..flaky Chinese pancakes and love letter biscuits here. The flaky Chinese pancakes were really delicious eaten warm. You can eat it with soup or with curry. Being a Malaysian, I would prefer it with curry. It’s quite like the famous Malaysian ‘roti canai’. The ‘love letter’ biscuits are very popular during Chinese New Year. They are also called ‘kuih kapit’. Some people roll it up like a cigar. Folding them is much easier and quicker. Both are my favourite. I’m really thankful to my friends for giving me these lovely food.
