Spicy Salmon On Spinach
Salmon is exceptional for its health benefits and highly popular in the culinary world. I would call it a wonder fish because of it’s high essential omega-3 fatty acids which are very important for our bodies, especially the heart and also the brain, besides its reported abilities to prevent or improve a lot of other sicknesses and diseases.
I grew up eating a lot of fish because my parents believe that fish are good for the brains. I remember my parents always said that my black, shiny hair was because of the amount of fish that I ate. We didn’t had much so my mom used to buy the cheapest fish almost everyday. We just had it pan fried and some soya sauce to go with it. While we ate the fish, the cats enjoyed the bones, head and skin. Not only were we healthy but our cats were very healthy too. We did not have money to buy cat food. In fact, there was no cat food around. Our cats ate what we ate, mostly fish bones and rice…..Chinese cats…..haha.
I am very thankful that I can get lots of fresh salmon here and they are not as expensive as other fish. The best is the wild Alaskan salmon which is more expensive. I have learned various ways to cook salmon. I love it spicy. It is such a versatile fish that it tastes very delicious in whatever way you cook it.
This is another easy salmon dish with Chinese spinach for 2 persons. It’s simple and goes well with rice. There’s no elaborate seasonings. Sea salt and some light soya sauce is good enough. Just in case you don’t know, pure sea salt is better for health and taste good. Never use table salt.
Ingredients
100g Chinese spinach
2 salmon steaks
1 handful coriander (washed chopped)
2 chilies (chopped)
4 pips of garlic (finely chopped)
sea salt
light soya sauce
fried shallot oil
Rub some sea salt and corn flour on both sides of the salmon steaks. Let it marinade for about 30 minutes and then pan fry it until just cooked. Do not over cook otherwise it will be tough. Dish up onto a plate.
Heat up some fried shallot oil in a frying pan or wok. Add the spinach and fry. Add some sea salt to season. This English spinach is very tender and delicious and only needs a quick stir fry in high heat. Dish up on to a plate. Place the 2 pieces of fried salmon steak on top of the spinach.
Heat up some oil in the frying pan or wok. Add the chopped garlic and fry until golden. Then add the chopped chilies, coriander, some sea salt and some light soya sauce and fry until fragrant. Scoop onto the salmon and serve hot.
Do you often eat salmon? How do you ensure that you have enough omega-3 in your diet? Do you have a favourite salmon dish to share? Please share, add and comment in the comment box below.

The fried salmon alone is soooooo good already. I often have to add ground white pepper to marinade frozen fishes (mostly traveled a long way to our place), but yours looks so juicy and fresh, I don’t think it needs any.

Yep, the pan-fried salmon on its own already look so good! But always good to perk it up. And I like that you combine it with vegetables - it is like one-dish settles everything with steamed rice.
I love salmon but kinda expensive so I eat sardines instead….what to do…”pauper” fish …heee hee but I really like sardines (with spices).

I love salmon because they are really flavorful. People eat way too much omega-6 and it’s so easy to obtain omega 3 by eating salmon. The dish is beautiful and definitely no table or iodized salt.
The Kitchen Masochist on April 30th, 2010
I love salmon and its color. It’s probably my favorite fish. I’d eat more of it if it weren’t so expensive here since they’re imported mostly from Canada and sometimes, Norway.
I love salmon best when it’s grilled and seasoned with just salt and pepper with a bit of butter and drizzled with lemon.
Drick on April 30th, 2010
beautiful sear on that salmon and yes, I agree, the simple seasonings is all that is needed with that wonderful stir-fry of tasty topping

@Divina - Totally agree with you that people eat way too much omega-6. Hope more people realise that. It doesn’t take much to change our diets for better health. I’m glad I love salmon
@The Kitchen Masochist - Yes, I know, it’s also very expensive in Malaysia. I love your way of grilling it with butter and lemon. I would love to try that. I know it is very delicious, especially with the lemon. I would love to BBQ it when summer comes. Oh, just can’t wait for the warm weather. I’ll be so happy then
@Drick - Thanks very much for sharing, Drick!
@Mary - We are very lucky to be staying in a place where salmon is not too expensive. So we have no excuse of not eating it for better health

@deana@lostpastremembered - Haha…I have to agree with you
Sometimes I do eat carelessly, especially when it’s very delicious
But thanks very much for your lovely compliment!
@anncoo - Awww…thanks very much, Ann. Really appreciate. That’s very helpful of you
@lequan@luvtoeat - I know it’s difficult with our choice of food when the kids are small. But I have found a trick. I made very spicy chili oil. Very often I don’t cook spicy food too but those who like it spicy will add chili oil and it’s also very delicious, only not colourful like the fresh chili. There’s always chili oil in my house for emergency…haha
Sure you can start training your kids to eat spicy, but very, very mild.
@Yummy Team - Wonderful to know you also love salmon ![]()
That’s chili pepper…it’s spicy. There are various types of red chilies, some are hotter than others. Usually I use the medium size ones but this all depends on the stock in the Chinese shops.
@theUngourmet - Thanks very much! My hubby doesn’t like to eat fish too often but he has no choice cos if he is too choosy, he has to go hungry or become a vegetarian…haha

We eat a lot of salmon too as it is the most easily available fish at the grocery stores. I normally just broil (grill) it and have it with soy sauce. Your salmon dish looks very tasty and appetizing. You will definitely have to cook more rice to go with it.

You’re right it’s very healthy too. Most people don’t seem to get enough omega-3s without eating fish. To get more omega-3s into my diet I’ve been cooking with coconut oil and adding small fatty fish (like herring) to salads for lunch.
