Quick Sour Plum Sauce Chicken
Sour plum sauce is a very beautiful sauce for cooking meat. I love simple, easy, quick cooking. Yesterday was just one of those days that I badly needed a super fast and super easy dish as I would be very busy for the whole day.
Chicken legs are easy to cook. I have 4 in my fridge. Braising them sounded good because my children love to spoon gravy over the rice. Basically I just added most of the sauces that I can find in my kitchen. I cooked quite a big pot to last for 2 meals. My children liked it very much. Here’s my recipe to share:
Ingredients A
4 chicken legs (cut each into 2)
1/2 whole garlic (peeled and chopped)
2T plum sauce
4T tomato sauce
4 T soya sauce
1T sugar
3T wine (or more)
1T oyster sauce
1C water
Put everything into a pot and let it boil for about 30 minutes.
Ingredients B (thickening)
1T corn flour
4T water
Add the corn flour and water to a bowl. Adjust the seasoning according to taste. Stir well and pour into the pot of chicken. Mix well and let it boil again. The sauce will thicken. Turn off the fire and serve hot. It goes well with rice, pasta or noodles.

@Sarah, Maison Cupcake - Yes, I cooked that for lunch and dinner…just too busy to cook another time. Will try with duck one day…should be good I think.

Yes, buy more if you are ever in London. Don’t forget the Korean Hot Bean Paste too. Cheers from cold, snowy Scotland. I badly need your beautiful desserts now to make me smile.

I understand it is quite a challenge to cook on a busy day, but you have made it and probably said no to canned foods.

Mary,
Do you have a homemade plum sauce recipe? If you do, you’d have to do that post sometime. I’d be in heaven! ![]()
impromptu diva on December 19th, 2009
looks gooood and easy! what’s a substitute for plum sauce? I haven’t seen any plum sauce around.. or maybe i have to look around… thanks again mary!
Mary on December 19th, 2009
@Penny - Looks like a very good combination. You can try now. It’s very delicious. I cooked again for lunch today.
@Cookin’ Canuck - Yes, unbelievably quick. Everyone was happy, including the cook
@Anncoo - I can believe that. My pot of rice, supposed to have left over for fried rice, was all gone
@TasteHongKong - You are correct…I don’t serve canned food to my family…very, very rare. The only canned food that I used, very rarely, is SPAM, which makes very good fried rice.
@Sook - Oh…I wish I know how to make plum sauce from scratch. Hope one fine day…just have to keep learning
You’ll be the first to know!
@impromptu diva - It is super easy. So sorry, I don’t think there’s a substitute for it. Try to find in Oriental shops. I’m sure they should have cos this sauce is commonly used in Chinese cooking. I really hope you can find it.

I almost had to cook another pot. My family liked it very much.
Cheah on December 20th, 2009
My, this dish is very delicious and the sour plum sauce comes in very handy. Think it’ll be great with pork knuckles.
Janice on December 20th, 2009
Looks great and nice and easy - my kind of cooking!
Mary on December 20th, 2009
@Cheah - I can believe that it will be great with pork knuckles. I have to go to the butcher to ask him for that. I don’t see them at the supermarkets.
@Janice - Thank you. We can cook together then :P….simple, easy & quick.
Shirley on December 20th, 2009
Mary,
Sour plum sauce is a good idea. Usually here we use tomato for a sour curry with dash of lemon juice.
Mary on December 21st, 2009
@Shirley - I like tomato and lemon juice for cooking too but sour plum sauce gives a different flavour. Give a try if you can find it. It comes in different brands so taste it first for sourness and saltiness.
uma on December 21st, 2009

Will you believe that I’ve never had plum sauce? I should find some the next time I visit our local Asian grocery - this sounds easy and tasty. I bet the kids would even love it.
Mary on December 21st, 2009
@Joylicious - We must be sharing similar heritage or upbringing. I think the sauce just make the rice go down faster….LOL
@Olive - This is simple, easy, quick and delicious. Hope you try out soon. This is now my personal popular recipe.
@Alta - Yes, can’t believe it…LOL. Just joking. I never knew until my mother-in-law cooked duck with this beautiful sauce….just so delicious. Put less sugar if you want it more sour.
Divina on December 22nd, 2009
This is my kind of dish with lots of sauce and definitely needs rice.
kristy on December 22nd, 2009
Love the simple way of making this! I made this only to feed my own family but not my in-laws! hehe…. You know, elderly always have their special request when come to food! “No shotcuts!”…..
Mary on December 22nd, 2009
@Divina - Must be the type of dish your dad cooked.
@Kristy - Whah, your in-laws must have high standards. Maybe my in-laws too. But we don’t meet often so I think everything taste very delicious to them even if they are not used to
By the way, don’t tell them you use shortcuts even if you do.
Patty on December 22nd, 2009
Wow! These look so good, your photos make my mouth water! Incredible! And the recipe looks simple enough for me to follow without totally screwing up! I bet these are even better with a nice, steaming hot bowl of sticky white rice! Thanks for sharing!
