Refreshing, healthy fennel and apple juice

Refreshing, healthy fennel and apple juice

Freshly made juices are important for health. They are an integral part of a healthy diet. They are full of live nutrients that get easily assimilated into our body cells quickly, especially on an empty stomach, for the many important cell functions. My family has been drinking juices for more than 10 years. I enjoy juicing and I really love freshly made juices. My best and most common juice for my family is carrot and apple juice.

Recently, a very lovely food blogger friend, Cenwen, of http://cuisinedesanges.canalblog.com, introduced me to this lovely Fennel And Apple Juice. She spoke highly of this juice. It sounded so simple I just have to try. I have read and heard a lot about the many health benefits of fennel. I totally agree with Cenwen that this Fennel And Apple Juice is very refreshing and very delicious.

I had just received a message from Mel of Bouchon for Two that she and Leela of She Simmers are proud to present Beet ‘n Squash YOU! — a monthly food- fight wherein the stupendous virtues of vegetables are extolled. December is Battle Fennel. So, what a coincident. I can submit this post then.

Fennel

Fennel

Fennel is high in vitamins and minerals and contains anti-cancer properties. It is commonly used for treating digestive and respiratory problems. It has a variety of medicinal properties and can be eaten raw or cooked. However, do not over dose on it despite its many benefits. I drink this juice once or twice a week.

All you need is a small fennel and 2 apples, either green or red. I love the red apples more as I love a sweeter juice.

The masticating juicer

The masticating juicer

My best juicer is the masticating type of juicer. It grinds the vegetables and fruits as it juices. This prevents any buildup of heat and subsequent oxidation of the juices as what happens when using a centrifugal or spinning basket type of juicer. This juicer is a great investment to your health. It is called Matstone in UK, Samson in the States and Alpha in Malaysia. It comes with multi purpose functions. I often use it to grind herbs and spices too.

Juices are power packed with nutrients. If you have never drunk freshly made juices, do not jump in and drink a big glass. You will throw your body out of balance and feel sick. Go slow.

Another important point to take note is that our bodies can only handle 6 - 8 oz of juices at a time (less for children). So, do not down yourself with a gallon. Not only are you wasting the juices but most likely you will feel sick. You may be able to handle that for a while but in time you will not feel good.

Last caution: Do not simply combine your vegetables and fruits. Apples are the only fruit to combine with vegetables. This is because of the different digestive enzymes in our bodies to digest vegetables and fruits. To know more tips, please read the article that I posted sometime ago, Carrot, Apple And Beet Juice For Health (link below).

You’re making me jealous now. I absolutely love fennel. They have a great licorice flavor. I also love them shaved combined with arugula as a salad and season with lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Fennel is good for those you are suffering from flatulence and for those who want to lose weight. Ehem, I think people who hate fennel would start eating buying them now. :d

Oh Mary, I have a lot of juices to share with you. :D

Oh Mary, I have a lot of juices to share with you. :D

Amber @ Native Food and Wine  on November 26th, 2009

Mary this sounds great! I love the flavor combination. I have a masticating juicer and it is the best. I run kale through it but sadly I am without it as I travel.

Mary  on November 26th, 2009

@Divina - Ooooh….I must try your salad. Sounds very delicious and healthy. Thanks for added info on the health benefits. I would love to try out your juice recipes. Thanks for sharing.

@Amber - I can undertstand how frustrating it is not to have the juicer with you, especially when you travel. Sometimes I wish it is compact and light weight so that I can bring along wherever I travel.

We use a lot of fennel seeds and ground fennel, but the fresh one is not available. When you eat out in a restaraunt, after you have finished, you will be served sugar coated fennel seeds along with the bill as an aftermint. Check my post on herbal water for some more health benefits of fennel

My body can usually take a very small amount of cold or raw drinks, but I always love seeing those natural colors of fresh juices.

Mary  on November 26th, 2009

@Shirley - That’s something new to me, sugar-coated fennel seeds. I must try that. Sounds very delicious. Thanks very much for including the link here….useful information.

@3hungrytummies - Thanks. I’m so glad that I tried it. It is very delicious.

@foodlovee - Hope you can get the fresh fennel. I really like it.

@TasteHongKong - It’is good to start at small amount. Some people do need time to adjust. Fresh juices are not only beautiful and refreshing in colour and taste but most important in their health benefits. Hope you continue to try a little each time.

Wow thankyou for all the information about fennel and juicing in general - very interesting indeed! I have never thought about juicing it though - so will have to give it a go!

Mary  on November 26th, 2009

@Lisa - Thanks for your lovely compliment. Hope you give a go at juicing very soon.

The Klutzy Cook  on November 26th, 2009

Mary you’ve inspired me to start juicing again. I used to do it all the time, but haven’t much lately. I love the idea of using fennel - never tried it before. Thanks again.

Joan Nova  on November 26th, 2009

I don’t juice but I absolutely love fennel in its raw form. For me it’s a refreshing snack and a great salad item…so I imagine juiced with apple must be delicious.

Mary  on November 26th, 2009

@The Klutzy Cook - Thanks for sharing. Hope you start juicing again. I never know that fennel is so lovely combined with apples. I’m so glad that I tried. Give a go.

@Joan Nova - I haven’t tried eating fennel as a salad yet. I hope to try soon. I’m sure it is very delicious.

anncoo  on November 27th, 2009

This is so healthy that all of us should have this often at home. Sometime I use celery, bitter gourd with orange and apple to make into juice.

Michael Chin  on November 27th, 2009

I have the same juicer as yours; we often use it to make carrot & apple juice. Think I must try fennel & apple soon. Thanks for sharing !

Mary  on November 27th, 2009

@Anncoo - Wonderful to know that you make juices too. I do hope too that more people will start juicing. It’s so important for health. Keep juicing!

@Michael - That’s so lovely to know that you are juicing too. Give this one a try…it’s really good. I’m sure you’ll love it. Keep juicing!

penny aka jeroxie  on November 27th, 2009

I have to get back to my juicing. I love this combination. Very healthy.

Mary  on November 27th, 2009

@Penny - Totally agree that you need to get back to juicing to build a stronger immune system so that you don’t suffer from bugs easily. I think I must bug you on this…haha

cheah  on November 27th, 2009

Don’t know how fennel taste like. Didn’t realise that you can’t simply combine the ingredients for juicing, so in future, will look up your blog first before I venture into juicing!

Mary  on November 27th, 2009

@Cheah - Fennel has a lovely taste. It looks quite like celery. They are cousins. I can’t remember seeing them back home or maybe I was just too busy to notice…haha. I was definitely not adventurous in food then.

kristy  on November 28th, 2009

Mary, you know that we can’t easily find fresh fennel in M’sia! I have read lots of goodness about fennel but too bad don’t even have a chance to try it. I need those very much to loose weight! haha…. You & Divina should offer me some lol! =P

Mary  on November 28th, 2009

@Kristy - Actually I had never seen it when I was back home. You have to come here then….I’ll feed you a lot :D …..and lots of exercise too :)

Thanks for the apple blend with Fennel,i am currently in Tunisia and fennel is the number one juice drink here,i use it in salads back in Australia but have never tasted the juice before now,its great. regards Frank.

Mary  on September 29th, 2011

@Frank - Oh wow….that’s amazing. Tunisians must be very healthy! It’s quite a while I have not drunk this juice. Fennel is not always available here and if there are, it’s quite expensive. Have fun juicing! :D
