One of the world and top attractions in London is the famous Portobello Market, a street market. We were one day walking along the walkway outside Kensington Gardens admiring all the beautiful artworks when a Brazilian lady stopped to talk to us. She explained to us some of the beautiful pieces of art; the artists and the mediums used for the various paintings. Then she told us about Portobello Market, a place that we must not miss. It opens everyday but the best time to go is on Saturday. She taught us how to get there. That was very kind of her.
The next Saturday we decided to go there. When we got out of the tube station, we saw a lot of people but didn’t know which way to turn. So we stopped to ask a young man sitting on the bench. He stretched his hand out to the right and told us to turn left!! Confused we asked him just to confirm. Immediately he changed his hand direction, his face blushing! We didn’t purposely want to embarrass him. We just didn’t want to get lost.
We were greeted with a huge crowd as we headed towards the right direction. We have not seen so many people for a very long time. The road was filled by people and not by cars. All the shops along the road were crowded with people looking for a good bargain. But I was greatly fascinated by a lot of interesting things going on. Here are some of the interesting pictures I took.
Portobello Market is huge, about 2 miles long which occupies almost the whole of Portobello Road. You meet people from all over the world there. It’s a great tourist attraction and the place where the film Notting Hill was filmed. You can actually spend many hours there looking at the many interesting things. There are also various food to buy and eat and fruits and vegetables to buy. The Spanish rice dish, paella, is very popular and is very nice. I love to watch how they cook in huge metal pans.
In fact, if you want to earn some money, just be a little creative to put up a little show like in the pictures above. I think you can get quite a big collection by the end of the day.
This is really a very interesting and memorable trip which I would recommend anyone visiting London.
